In the spring of 2009, Touro Synagogue entered into a partnership with our neighborhood school, Sophie B. Wright Charter School. Our members are actively involved with Sophie B. Wright in ever-growing ways including but not limited to: tutoring and acting as reading buddies to the students, repairing and painting classrooms, providing monthly birthday and teacher appreciation snacks for the faculty, ordering books for the students at discounted rates, simple landscaping and gardening, organizing drives for items needed by the students– from winter coats to prom dresses, arranging for motivational speakers to serve as role models for the students, providing advocacy for the school, and organizing special projects. In turn, Sophie B. Wright has opened their arms to us at Touro offering us support and friendship in a variety of ways. Our relationship with Sophie B. Wright and the growing sense of community between and among us is exciting, dynamic, and filled with unending opportunity and possibility. We invite you to join us in our ongoing activities or to suggest new dimensions for this partnership.

Sophie Wright seniors are college bound! You can help. Interested in mentoring a student through the process? Contact Teri Hunter at tlhunter22@gmail.com. No time to mentor? Help defray college application fees. Donate $25-$50 to the Touro social action fund and earmark the donation for Sophie B. Wright.

Make a difference for a lifetime: read with or tutor a child.

Touro and SBW are expanding the tutoring and reading-buddy program. No professional educational experience is needed; the program is coordinated and supervised by professionals. Ideal time commitment is 1 hour per week, but any time you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Please contact Teri Hunter for details if you are at all interested, tlhunter22@gmail.com.
